Pilates in Paradise FAQs

  • What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise developed in the early 20th century by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates, after whom it was named. It's shown to increase flexibility, tone muscles, and improve joint health by strengthening the core to create a balanced body.
  • Why should I do Pilates?
Pilates is for every body, yours included! By strengthening your core muscles, you'll improve your balance, mobility, endurance, and posture. This means a decreased likelihood of injuries and pain in athletes and people of all ages. Plus, the mind-body emphasis that's essential to Pilates is proven to help alleviate stress and anxiety, meaning a healthier, happier you!
  • I have an injury or chronic pain. Can Pilates help?
Pilates is great for rehabilitation and helping alleviate chronic pain. Pilates teaches the importance of proper body positioning and muscle alignment, meaning you won't overcompensate muscle groups leading to pain and helping you properly work through physical therapy exercises. We always work at your pace, making sure you aren't putting undue stress on strained areas.
  • What equipment does Pilates use?
The foundation of Pilates uses both the reformer and the mat, and an array of apparatus pieces like the Cadillac, Electric Chair, Wunda Chair, Guillotine, Baby Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, Small Barrel, Pedipole, Foot Corrector, Toe Stretcher, and even the Neck Stretcher! Group classes use the reformer, mat, springs and barrels, while the other pieces are available for use in private lessons. Virtual sessions are done using the mat unless the participant has apparatus at home.
  • Tell me about your studios.
We have two studios serving the Florida Keys area - Tavernier and Ocean Reef Club. Tavernier is open to all while Ocean Reef is exclusive to residents of the Ocean Reef Club.
  • When are you open?
The Tavernier studio hours are 7am-8pm Monday-Saturday, or by appointment. The Ocean Reef Club Pilates space is open 6am-7pm Monday-Saturday, or by appointment. The fitness area is open to Residence Club Members 24-hours a day, every day, for all your fitness needs.
  • How do I book a service, like a private Pilates session, or see your class schedule?
Tavernier - you can book an appointment online or call us at (305) 453-0801. Ocean Reef Club - you can book an appointment online or call us at (305) 453-0801. Remember, all new members must start with the Introductory Month Package so we can access your fitness goals and how to best help you achieve them.
  • Do you have a cancellation policy?
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy for all services, including classes.
  • Why do all new members have to start with the Introductory Month package?
Every body is different, as is everyone's experience and comfort with physical movement. We've created the Introductory Month package to best serve your individual needs. These "get to know you" sessions introduce you to Pilates and help us identify three specific exercises to support your strength and flexibility goals. At the end of this month, you'll have an individualized program to meet your goals. If you are a seasoned Pilates student, these four lessons allow you to jump in at a reduced rate, and it helps us get to know you so we can best suggest classes.
  • What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes for you, but please keep in mind, the baggier the clothes, the harder it is for us to see and help you with your alignment. You will wear socks and no shoes. Special non-skid socks are available for purchase in both studios.
  • What services will I find at Tavernier?
We offer semi-private and private Pilates sessions, group classes, and Pilates instructor training lessons.
  • What services will I find at Ocean Reef Club?

  • Is the Ocean Reef studio gym open to anyone?

Ocean Reef Club members can use the Residence Club fitness center only during scheduled appointments. Ocean Reef Club members can book personal training, stretch therapy and yoga with us.

My first week of multiple visits and I can’t tell you enough how astounded I am with every visit. Christie and Mary are the best! Having had injuries that made me weaker, Pilates is restoring my strength and teaching me amazing things about mind and body control. EVERYONE should do it!!!
